Monel Alloy Plate
Classification :
Product introduction
Monel Alloy Plate is a nickel-copper corrosion-resistant alloy plate based on Ni and Cu. It is widely used in extreme environments due to its excellent comprehensive properties (corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and high strength).
Core features
1. Excellent corrosion resistance: Resists corrosion from a wide range of media
2. Excellent mechanical properties: Balances strength and toughness
3. Excellent machinability and weldability
4. Wear and fatigue resistance
Grade
Grade | Chemical composition | Features | Core advantages |
Monel 400 | Ni: 63%-70%;Cu: 28%-34%;Fe≤2.5%;Mn≤2.0% | Basic corrosion resistance, good processability | The cost is relatively low and suitable for conventional anti-corrosion scenarios |
Monel K-500 | Adding Al (2.3%-3.1%) and Ti (0.35%-0.85%) to Monel 400 | Precipitation hardened alloy, higher strength (tensile strength up to 1200MPa), corrosion resistance equivalent to 400 | High strength + corrosion resistance, suitable for corrosion-resistant parts with complex stress |
Monel R-405 | Same as Monel 400, but with strictly controlled carbon content (C ≤ 0.025%) | Avoid carbide precipitation and reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion | Suitable for situations where heat treatment cannot be performed after welding |
Monel 502 | High copper content (Cu≈30%), with a small amount of Si added | Excellent welding and brazing properties | Mainly used for welding filler materials |
Production process
1.Alloy Casting
Nickel, copper, iron, and manganese are melted in precise proportions in an electric arc furnace or induction furnace to ensure a uniform composition. Steel ingots (square or round) are then formed through continuous casting or die casting.
2.Hot Rolling
The ingots are heated to 1000°C-1150°C and rolled through a hot rolling mill into thicker "hot-rolled slabs" (typically 10mm-50mm thick). This process also refines the grain size and improves mechanical properties.
3.Cold Rolling
Hot-rolled slabs undergo multiple cold rolling passes (at room temperature or cryogenic temperatures) to achieve the target thickness (as thin as 0.1 mm) while also improving the surface finish and dimensional accuracy of the plate.
4.Heat Treatment
Heat treatment processes vary by grade. Monel 400 requires solution treatment (870°C-980°C, followed by water cooling) to relieve processing stresses; Monel K-500 requires precipitation hardening (650°C-700°C, followed by air cooling) to increase strength through the precipitation of intermetallic compounds (such as Ni₃Al).
5.Finishing and Inspection
The plates are leveled, trimmed, and surface polished (e.g., 2B, BA finish). Spectroscopic analysis (composition testing), mechanical property testing (tensile strength, hardness), and non-destructive testing (ultrasonic, eddy current testing) are performed to ensure quality.
Application areas
①Offshore Engineering
Both Monel 400 and Monel K500 are renowned for their exceptional resistance to saltwater corrosion and are widely used in the manufacture of ship components, seawater heat exchangers, offshore oil drilling platforms, and deep-sea exploration equipment.
②Oil and Gas Industry
Monel K500 can withstand long-term operation in the sour gas, high-pressure, and high-temperature environments of oil and gas extraction. It is commonly used in oil and gas extraction equipment, downhole tools, valves, and pump components.
③Chemical industry
Both alloy plates can be used to manufacture chemical reactors, evaporators, heat exchangers, etc., and can ensure the stability and durability of the equipment in corrosive environments such as strong acids and strong alkalis.
④Aerospace
Monel K500's high strength, corrosion resistance, and low magnetism make it suitable for aircraft engine components, structural parts, and electronic equipment. Additionally, Monel 400's non-toxicity and biocompatibility make it suitable for applications in food processing, medical devices, and more.
